Gay Gotham: Art and Underground Culture in New York

Gay Gotham presented the lost histories of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender artists in New York City. The exhibition showcased paintings and photographs, letters, snapshots, ephemera, and video to illuminate the influential personal and creative networks that helped to shape modern culture but remain largely unknown today. Pure+Applied worked with curators Donald Albrecht and Stephen Vider and exhibition designer Joel Sanders Architects. In keeping with the graphics that Pure+Applied first developed for the exhibition catalogue, we worked with Joel Sanders Architects to design a large infographic wall map of the historical queer networks and communities in New York City that would form the centerpiece of the exhibition. Headlines that turned the corners of the display panels were a hint to look to the often-unsung “edges” of communities.

Gay Gotham: Art and Underground Culture in New York—a historical look at queer art and culture in 20th-century New York City at the Museum of the City of New York—stages a network of queer affiliations. In two galleries, one treating the years 1910–60 and the other 1960– 95, the exhibit maps, both literally and metaphorically, the physical and psychological spaces opened by the work of ten exemplary artists.
