Our Waterfront exhibition concept that was at once transformative and deeply rooted in site-specific history. Historically, the buildings along the Brooklyn waterfront were mainly dedicated to storage; therefore, we made operable drawers a key experience for visitors to the Waterfront exhibition. Different sections of the exhibition offered different sensory experiences, including smell and touch components that revealed the variety of imports into the 19th-century waterfront (such as cochineal, jute, and saltpeter) as well as audio and video components featuring stories of workers, activities, families, neighborhoods, and ecosystems.
