Robert Moses & The Future of the City

For the Robert Moses & The Future of the City exhibition, we covered the walls, furniture, and floor with homasote—raw and painted white—to establish both a uniform surface and a material metaphor for Robert Moses’s treatment of the city in his large-scale projects. An “island” occupied the center of the gallery; the structure was built to accommodate a large-scale vintage model of the proposed Mid-Manhattan Expressway. A ramp built through the island allowed a “birds-eye” view not only of the model, but also of the entire gallery. The ramp also served as an expression of the idea of an “accessible city.”
