Folk City: New York and the Folk Music Revival

The multimedia exhibition Folk City: New York and the Folk Music Revival featured original instruments, handwritten lyrics, and video and film footage to tell the story of the folk music revival. The exhibition traced the roots of the revival, its growth in New York, its major players, and its impact on American politics and culture during the tumultuous 1960s. In the approach to the main gallery, we placed the iconic lyrics of “This Land Is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie in large letters on the floor. On the back wall, we displayed flashing images of iconic musical acts of the “Folk Era.” Within the main gallery, we implemented video and listening stations so that visitors would have the chance to experience the sounds and visuals presented throughout the gallery. Pure+Applied also designed the accompanying catalogue.

. . . in its artifacts and matter-of-fact wall labels, the museum show captures the ambition, the ferment and the (sometimes contentious) sense of community that made a few blocks of Greenwich Village into a cultural bellwether in the 1950s and early 1960s.
