National Park Service
/ Shapins Associates
Discover Liberty was an initiative started by Shapins Associates at the request of the U.S. National Park Service to enhance the visitor experience at the Statue of Liberty after 9/11 when they closed public access to the crown. This logo was one facet of the initiative and incorporates the word “liberty” in the 13 most-spoken languages.
We recommended panels for the entrance to the island and the information center and cafe to both make visitors feel more welcome and raise awareness that the island is part of the U.S. National Park Service. We devised the tagline using “390+” to address the fact that the number of NPS sites increases regularly.
Due to circumstances beyond control the one component of the program to actually be implemented was the redesign of the admissions ticket. It integrates a “Welcome” message with the pairing of both Liberty and Ellis islands—they are distinct NPS sites—and is a memento.
